USB screen mirroring not working

If screen mirroring doesn't work, it's most likely related to macOS permissions. Here's how to fix it.

This tutorial has been updated the to latest design of Rotato

iPhone screen mirroring in Rotato is when you connect your Mac with your iPhone or iPad via a USB cable. Rotato is then able to show your iPhone's screen on the mockup - live, and in real time.

Enabling the USB connection

The first time you try to connect your iPhone, Rotato will show a dialog asking if you will allow Rotato to use your iPhone. It may describe it as "a camera" even though no one is being photographed. It's just the way all the wires are connected internally.

Troubleshooting the USB connection

There's a risk that you may have overlooked or accidentally clicked away the first permission request, and now you see a black or transparent screen instead of your iPhone's screen.

I'll show you a few ways to fix that.

Check that Rotato has permission

  1. Go to System Settings
  2. Go to Privacy and Security
  3. Go to Camera

Double check that Rotato's switch is switched on - the screenshot below shows what it looks like when the switch is off and mirroring will not work.

If Rotato has permission but it still doesn't work

Sometimes, you have to reset the permission state by switching permissions on, then off again.

  1. Open Rotato
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Camera > switch Rotato off. macOS may want to restart Rotato now. Restart Rotato.
  3. Go back to Settings > Privacy and Security > Camera > switch Rotato on. If asked, restart Rotato again
  4. Open Rotato and start screen mirroring

Your iPhone's screen should now show on the 3D mockup iPhone and you can start taking screenshots.

Tip: double check with Quicktime

You can double check that your cable and iPhone are capable of connecting with Quicktime instead of Rotato.

  1. Open Quicktime
  2. Right click the Quicktime dock icon and choose New Movie Recording
  3. In the arrow-down menu next to the red Record button, check that your iPhone appears in the Screens section
  4. Click on your iPhone

You should now see your iPhone's screen. If you don't, double check your cables and see if there are any alerts you may have missed on your iPhone. You can also try rebooting both your iPhone and Mac.
