Add and soften a custom shadow

Ground devices with a shadow that suits the composition.

Use custom shadows to control how devices sit against the background. If these options are missing, update to an app version that includes custom shadows.

Choose a shadow

  1. Open Devices in the scene controls, then find Shadows.
  2. Choose Custom or Custom bottom.
  3. Adjust Intensity and Softness.
  4. Adjust the available shadow-plane position controls for the placement you need.

Fade a wall shadow

For a HomeView wall scene, open Style → Devices → Shadows and choose HomeView Wall. Adjust Fade distance to soften the shadow as it travels away from the device. A value of 0 disables distance fading. The shadow follows moving devices while the receiving plane stays in place.

This artistic fade is for the Realtime canvas and its image exports. Rendered View uses separate physical lighting. See the HomeView guide for the wall setup.

Check the whole scene

When you add a second device to a scene using baked shadows, Rotato switches to Custom so the shadow follows the combined scene. Existing Custom settings and No shadow are preserved.

Look at every device in a multi-device scene. The shadow is part of the shared scene, so moving one object can change the overall composition.

Scrub the movie and inspect the closest and widest camera views. Keep the receiving plane beneath or behind the devices rather than covering their screens.

Use No shadow when you want a floating graphic treatment. A model may also offer baked shadow choices.
